National Turtle Day is May 23, 2023. This special day exists to raise awareness for the health and preservation of turtles and the conservation efforts that take place to protect them. Each Honu is a valued member of Hawaiian tradition and our ecosystem. Here are three ways you can honor sea turtles this National Turtle Day.
You can show your commitment to the Honu and make every day National Turtle Day by volunteering. Many organizations devoted to sea turtle preservation regularly need volunteers to accomplish their goals, so keep your eyes open for opportunities to volunteer.
If you are short on time, consider donating to one or more conservation programs this National Turtle Day. Monetary donations are always helpful and needed, but you can also ask organizations if they have a wishlist from which you can purchase needed supplies. You may even be able to order online and have items sent directly to them.
Reporting suspicious activity or a sea turtle in distress might save a turtle's life. To report an injured sea turtle, call NOAA's Marine Wildlife Hotline at (888) 256-9840. To notify authorities of potentially illegal sea turtle activity, email RespectWildlife@noaa.gov. Alternatively, you can submit reports to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources at (808) 643-DLNR. You can be a voice for these valuable, voiceless members of our society.
We love all turtles, on land or in the sea, and we're proud to observe National Turtle Day! While sea turtles aren't exactly our area of expertise, we can help you care for your pet turtle or tortoise. Contact one of our clinics today with questions or concerns about your reptile pal.
