4 Questions to Ask Yourself During Responsible Dog Ownership Month

Owning a dog brings you a lot of joy. Your canine buddy is there to meet you when you come home after a long day. It’s fun to throw a ball around and hope that your dog brings it back. Who doesn’t love cuddling on the couch with your big furry friend? Along with all the benefits of having a dog, it’s a big responsibility. You’re charged with taking care of this four-legged being for his or her entire life. September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. Check yourself to make sure you’re practicing responsible dog ownership.

Is Your Dog Getting Enough Exercise?

That twice-daily walk around the block for a potty break may not be enough to keep your dog in prime health. Your dog may need up to an hour of rigorous movement each day to be the best. Physical activity keeps your dog stimulated and engaged. Your dog may want more of your attention. Some dogs need a lot more activity than others, so make sure you’re exposing your dog to different types of physical activity as a responsible pet owner.

How Safe Is Your Dog?

September is a great month for an annual safety check. Is your backyard secure? Does your dog have fresh water inside and outside? Check how well the leash and harness are holding up. Does it fit appropriately, so your pet can’t slide out but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable? Even with all our efforts, pets can still get loose. Does your dog have ID tags with updated information? Is your pet microchipped?

Have You Prepared for an Emergency with Your Pet?

Have a dog first-aid kit in your home for minor injuries. Take some time to make sure you have your vet’s phone number in your phone and that you can find it easily if you’re under stress. Pet injuries can occur anytime and anywhere. Make emergency preparations for your pet while you’re making plans for your family in case of an evacuation or fire. Create a “canine” go-bag with food and medications your pet may need. Identify a couple of dog-friendly hotels and know your local pet hotel in case you need to stay somewhere else for a couple of days. Being prepared can help reduce your own anxiety, which in turn reduces your dog’s stress.

Does Your Dog Get an Annual Appointment with the Vet?

Humans often put off going to the doctor for their own annual checkup because they are human. Your dog needs a yearly appointment with the vet for a well-being checkup. Your dog’s medical needs change as he or she ages. Your veterinarian can help you make sure your dog is getting the right nutrition, any dental care, and regular vaccinations. Celebrate Responsible Dog Ownership Month by making an appointment with Pet Hospitals of Hawaii.
