A Thank You to All Veterans

A Thank You to All Veterans

Mark your calendar this Thursday to take time out of your day to honor our veterans. Veterans Day is November 11, and this federal holiday was established to pay respects to all veterans, both men and women, who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

This proud tradition unites American citizens in giving thanks to individuals who sacrificed for our common good. It’s a great opportunity to thank a veteran personally and learn some facts about this fascinating day.

What Is the History of Veterans Day?

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson initiated the day to honor the soldiers of World War I. The number 11 is significant because the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month signaled the official end of World War I.

It became a federal holiday in 1926 under President Calvin Coolidge. It was later proposed that the holiday should be amended to celebrate the service of all veterans, so in 1954 the name was officially amended to become Veterans Day.

How Has Hawaii Played a Part in Military History?

Hawaii’s location in the Pacific makes it an invaluable strategic center for the U.S. military. No time was this more evident than during WWII. The U.S. conducts essential naval operations from the islands, and this has been key to establishing the United States as a world superpower. The placement of these U.S. facilities conveys the importance of Hawaii's participation in military history:

•       Kaneohe Marine Corps Base

•       Bellows Air Force Station

•       Army Fort Shafter

•       Army Schofield Barracks

•       Wheeler Army Airfield

•       Hickam Air Force Base

•       Camp Smith

•       Joint Base Pearl Harbor

•       Barbers Point Air Station

Outside of tourism, the second largest industry in Hawaii is the military. Every branch of service is represented across the Hawaiian Islands.
