Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year, and it can be fun for pets too. However, it is also a time that you have to be mindful about keeping your pet safe. Here are tips on celebrating Halloween with your furry family members.
Dress for the Occasion
Pet costumes can be a fun way to celebrate the holiday with your pet. Choose something that is comfortable for your pet to walk in and is not too heavy or too tight. Do not get a costume with any type of choking hazard. Some pets do not tolerate being in a costume well, and it may cause them stress or physical discomfort. If you know that your pet will be upset about a costume or you see that wearing something is agitating your pet, do not try to force the issue.
Be Careful About Treats
On a holiday when treats are the preferred way to celebrate, include your pet in the fun. Choose special treats meant for your pet instead of human treats.
Chocolates and sugary candies are not safe for cats and dogs. Also, remember that just because something is wrapped does not mean your pet will not be interested in it. Even an empty wrapper may seem like a delicious snack. Be sure to keep your bowl of human treats where your pet cannot get to it and throw wrappers away instead of leaving them out.
Prepare for Visitors
People ringing the doorbell for hours may cause some pets to be alarmed. If you have a dog who is wary of visitors or usually starts barking when the doorbell rings, consider leaving your candy for trick-or-treaters outside so they will not ring your bell. If you do plan on opening the door for people, make sure that your pets are in an area away from your entryway so that they will not be fearful or try to dart outside.
Make Halloween a fun and safe night for your pet. While people may like a good scare every now and then, pets do not. Do what you can to make your pet feel secure and comfortable during the festivities.
