August 26th is International Dog Day! Make the day extra paw-some by celebrating all the joy dogs bring to our lives. Check out these seven ways to make a dog's day. 

1. Fundraise for Your Local Shelter

Animal shelters can always use extra funds for the services they provide for abandoned animals. Consider holding a fundraiser on your social media account in honor of International Dog Day, or get the whole family involved by hosting a lemonade stand or yard sale and donating the proceeds. The dogs and other animals at the shelter will be so grateful you did, as will their humans!

2. Take Your Dog on An Adventure

Many dogs love exploring new places. Scope out a new dog park or beach that is pet-friendly and make a trip with your furry friend. For lots of dogs, the travel itself will be exciting as they look forward to going on adventures with their family.

3. Host a Doggy Date

Everyone loves a playdate. If your dog enjoys the company of other pups, why not schedule one between friends to let the dogs and their humans catch up? Have your friends bring their dogs over to hang out in the backyard or meet up for a hike everyone can enjoy together.

4. Adopt a Dog

If you have room in your heart and home, consider bringing a new dog into your family. Although puppies make wonderful pets, do not overlook older dogs who may be in need of someone just as much. There are perks to picking dogs that are getting on in years as they already are potty trained, can be less demanding than puppies and likely have experience interacting with kids and other animals.

5. Play a New Game

Dogs love to play simple games such as fetch and tug of war, but they also can enjoy more complicated ones. Try out a new game with them for International Dog Day. Introduce them to playing a version of hide and seek where they try to find you or a treat or set up an agility course for them to go through. They’ll love trying out something new and spending time with their best friend — you!  

6. Get Them Groomed

Spa days are fun for everyone, and dogs are no exception. Schedule an appointment with your local dog groomer to give yours a day of getting shampooed, styled, cleaned, and clipped. Your dog will love the attention.

7. Schedule an Appointment with Their Vet

Celebrate International Dog Day by scheduling your dog’s bi-annual exam. Regular exams help to keep your pets thriving and current with vaccinations, dental services, and other treatments they may need to stay happy and healthy.
