Cool Tidbits About Turtles

World Turtle Day is an opportunity for classrooms to learn about turtle habitats, species and more. In fact, it’s a great time for anyone to learn some interesting details about these amazing little or often enormous creatures:

•       Turtles have existed for roughly 260 million years.

•       Tortoises are turtles that live exclusively on land, except to bathe and hydrate themselves, unlike other varieties of turtle which live in and around aquatic habitats.

•       According to the World Atlas, there are at least 356 known species of turtle.

•       Some species of turtle can live for over 100 years, possibly a great deal longer.

•       The sex of a turtle is indicated by temperature after the egg has already been fertilized, with cooler temperatures producing males and warmer temperatures producing females.

•       The neck of a snake-necked turtle can be longer than the turtle’s own shell, according to Britannica.

•       While turtles are most often omnivorous, the alligator snapping turtle consumes an almost entirely carnivorous diet, which can include fish, shellfish, rodents, birds and other reptiles, even including turtles.
