July 1st is National ID Your Pet Day. This important day is a time for all pet owners to make sure that their pet’s identification information is current. This precautionary measure is a vital part of caring for your pet. In the event that your pet ever gets lost, having a current pet ID may be the only possible way for your pet to reunite with you.
All dogs as well as outdoor cats need to have a tag attached to their collar at all times. At a minimum, a tag needs your current contact information. It is also advisable to include a backup emergency contact number.
A dog’s tag should also have his or her name because dogs will typically be responsive to their name when somebody calls them. In addition, you should include any important medical information about your pet that would be relevant to someone who finds him or her. Lastly, be sure that you have a pet ID tag containing current license information required by the city or municipality where you live.
If you have not microchipped your pet, make it a point to do so this July. During the summer months, animals are especially likely to get lost.
A microchip enables animal services departments and rescues to identify an animal’s owner. If your pet is already microchipped, verify that your information in the national database is up to date.
Your pet always wants to be by your side. If you ever become separated and your pet cannot find his or her way home, current identification information will help your pet get back to you. Contact Pet Hospitals of Hawaii to learn more about what you can do to keep your pet’s ID current.
