September is Happy Cat Month

The Catalyst Council, a nonprofit organization advocating for cats’ welfare, has designated September as Happy Cat Month. The purpose of this month of recognition is to educate people about how to care for cats. It raises awareness among cat owners about the importance of veterinary care, healthy habits, and positive interaction. Here are a few components of cat care that Happy Cat Month seeks to bring attention to as well as some things that you can do to keep your cat healthy and happy.

Preventative Care

Preventative veterinary care is essential to cats’ wellbeing. Wellness checks can help assure that cats get attention for medical conditions before they cause animals to experience any discomfort or conditions become unnecessarily difficult to treat.

Quality Time Together

Cats are social animals. Your pet needs time with you to be happy. Contrary to some opinions, feline behavior is generally not indifferent or removed. Cats are loving and affectionate, and they need attention and contact with their owners. When animals know that they are loved, it enriches their quality of life considerably.

Mental Stimulation

Cats are playful, and their wild instincts compel them to explore, hunt, and seek out adventures. They thrive when they have stimulation and need regular opportunities to play with their owners and entertain themselves with toys.

Fresh Water

Some owners overlook the importance of helping their cats stay hydrated. Some cats do not like for people to observe them drinking, which is an instinct from the wild that has survived domestication. Just because owners may not see their cats drinking a lot does not mean that they do not need to worry about keeping their pet hydrated. Owners should make it a point to change their cat’s water as frequently to encourage drinking. Adequate hydration supports good overall health, including digestive activity, kidney function, and coat health.

Oral Care

Without preventative dental care, it is common for cats to experience severe dental issues, including painful infections and permanent tooth loss. Owners should try to get cats into the habit of brushing as early as possible. Dental cleanings with a veterinarian approximately once a year can also safeguard oral health.

Healthy Food

Cats are true carnivores, and they need healthy food that satisfies their nutritional needs. Look for cat foods that are made with high-quality and all-natural ingredients. You can give your cats healthy treats and snacks to make their day more fun and exciting.

Exercise

Regular exercise is a good way for cats to sustain a healthy body weight. Staying active also helps cats maintain good joint function and mobility as they age. Furthermore, physical activity is gratifying for animals. Some playtime together is a fun way for you to spend time with your cat while promoting his or her health.

This September, reflect on what you can do to take outstanding care of your cat. Check in with the care team at Pet Hospitals of Hawaii to make sure that your furry family members are receiving all of the medical care they need to maintain optimal health.
