What Is National Pet Day?

In 2006, Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate, established National Pet Day on behalf of pets and pet owners throughout the United States. The holiday, officially celebrated on April 11, is intended to bring awareness of the millions of pets in need of homes, as well as the health benefits that pets provide owners. It also gives you a great excuse to spend some quality time with your furry companion. Here are some key points to consider this April.

Shelters and Rescues

Each year, millions of cats and dogs are surrendered, seized, or accidentally released. This has placed immense pressure on shelters entrusted with the responsibility of finding suitable homes for animal friends everywhere. Unfortunately, there are almost always more animals in need of homes than willing adopters, so animals often linger in shelters for the majority of their lives or end up having to be euthanized. If you are willing and able to adopt, you can not only improve the life of an animal in need, but your own life as well, as you bask in the many benefits of pet ownership.

Benefits of Adopting a Pet

Although there are many benefits to owning a pet, some of the most important are intangible. While all pet owners are different, it is likely that you will experience a sense of having done something good and may begin to develop a selfless spirit that gradually shows itself in other areas of your life.

As well, recently science has identified several measurable advantages of pet ownership:

•       Decreased cholesterol

•       Decreased measurable cortisol (stress hormone)

•       Decreased triglyceride levels

•       Lower blood pressure

•       Fewer signs of depression

•       Increased fitness from exercise

In a modern world full of devices and social media, people have become increasingly isolated and lonely. In fact, the World Health Organization has called loneliness a growing health concern. This is troubling, but pets offer a perfect solution. By nature, dogs and cats are loving, available, and unconditionally affectionate. If this is not reason enough to adopt, consider the social and exercise benefits of taking your pet to the park, to training sessions, or to group activities.

Activities You Can Enjoy with Your Pet

If you are wondering whether you will eventually grow tired of your new companion, fear not. Owning a dog or other pet can open a huge range of activities that you can both enjoy. Consider taking up hiking, running, camping, backpacking, swimming, or exploring. Of course, you can also rely on more traditional activities like taking your dog to the dog park or playing fetch. Remember, there are plenty of pet enthusiasts out there, so do not be afraid to look for other pet people for both human and pet socialization.

Pet Hospitals of Hawaii hopes that all pet owners take the opportunity on April 11 to show their pets how much they are loved. Whether you are a veteran pet owner or a recent adopter, give your pet a hug to show your appreciation. If you live in O'ahu and need a vet for care of your new pet, contact Pet Hospitals of Hawaii today.
