Celebrate National Dogs in Politics Day

On September 23rd, you can give your favorite companion a little more attention and celebrate National Dogs in Politics Day. Also referred to as Checker’s Day, the day was created in honor of Richard Nixon’s dog Checkers. When Nixon made a 1952 television address defending his campaign spending, his loyal cocker spaniel beside him became a media superstar. The dog is credited with helping Nixon hold onto his position as Vice President for two terms. Here are some other famous political dogs that charmed the media and the American public.

FDR’s Fala

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s lovable Scottish Terrier Fala was referenced in his speech while campaigning for a fourth term. The dog’s full name was Murray the Outlaw of Falahill.

Theodore Roosevelt’s Rollo

Teddy Roosevelt’s massive Saint Bernard was a favorite of the press after the dog was seen watching over the president’s children like a guard dog when they were playing outside. Rollo was one of the dozens of animals that roamed the White House grounds while Roosevelt was president.

Barack Obama’s Sunny and Bo

Barack Obama’s Portuguese Water Dogs were a hit with the Obama children and the media. Bo was a gift from Ted Kennedy, and Sunny was adopted in 2013.

In honor of Checker’s day, you can drop by Pet Hospitals of Hawaii with your canine for a check-up. Contact us today for an appointment.
